Current Annual Premiums

The current premium rates are listed below. Please note that this is a guideline only and does not constitute a formal policy proposal. In order to receive a formal proposal, you must complete an application or renewal form and submit it for approval.

New Midwife – Individual Policy

For midwives (LM or CNM) who are new to practice and starting a policy within 12 months of first becoming licensed.

Covers the first 0-12 primary births

Additional births over 12 are incremented as shown

Base rate applies to first year of JUA policy

If policy begins after July 1, discount also applies to Year 2

Incremental Birth Rates

For midwives attending more than 12 births per year as the primary midwife, the following incremental rates are on top of the base rate:

Established Midwife – Individual Policy

For established midwives (LM or CNM)

$7,554

per year, base rate

Covers the first 0-12 primary births

Additional births over 12 are incremented as shown

Incremental Births Example:

For an established midwife (LM or CNM) planning to attend 30 primary births this year, the premium is calculated as follows:

  • 0-12 births included in the base rate: $7554
  • TOTAL: $11,250 annual premium

A new midwife would have the discounted base rate, but the same incremental rates as established midwives for annual births over 12.

Well-Person Care (CNM only)

For CNMs who provide well-person care outside of the childbearing year in addition to attending births

No gyn care, no additional premium

Up to 25% of your practice: $220 on top of base rate

26-50% of your practice: $440 on top of base rate

Over 50% of your practice: $880 on top of base rate

Well-Person Care Example:

For an established CNM planning to attend 30 primary births this year AND provide well-person care for up to 25% of their practice, the premium is calculated as follows:

  • 0-12 births included in the base rate: $7554
  • TOTAL: $11,470 annual premium

Freestanding Birth Center

Liability insurance for the facility

$1,889

per year, base rate

Rate includes unlimited births by midwives who hold individual JUA policies

Births by non-JUA-insured midwives are an additional $218 per birth

Does not cover individual midwives, just the facility

Birth Center Example:

For a birth center that expects to see 30 births done by JUA-insured midwives and 5 births by a non-JUA insured midwife, the premium is calculated as follows:

  • All facility births by JUA-insured midwives are included in the base facility premium: $1889

Practice Reduction Programs

The Practice Reduction programs are available to midwives who wish to significantly reduce the number of births they attend or stop attending births altogether but still do some prenatal/postpartum care.

Short-Term Practice Reduction

For midwives wanting to cut back on the number of births they attend to fewer than 12. Temporary; up to five years.

$1,320

per year, base rate for 0-2 births

Additional births from 3-11 are $440 per birth

Attending 12+ births will revert to standard pricing structure

Must be licensed for at least 5 years and in good standing

Must have 5 current and continuous years with JUA at 12+ births per year

Must remain current with CEUs and Peer Review

Long-Term Practice Reduction

For midwives wanting to stop attending births, but continue offering prenatal, postpartum and (for CNMs) well-person care.

per year

Midwife must sign a no-births endorsement for this policy; no intrapartum care in any capacity or within 12 hours after the birth

Must switch back to a birth policy before attending births in order to have coverage

Must be licensed for at least 10 years and in good standing

Must have 5 current and continuous years with JUA

Must remain current with CEUs and Peer Review

No maximum duration

Sabbatical

For midwives wanting to pause their practice for 3-12 months for any reason.

of base rate, pro-rated if sabbatical starts or ends mid-term

No midwifery care of any kind can be provided during sabbatical

Must have at least 12 months of JUA coverage prior to starting a sabbatical

Must maintain licensure during sabbatical

The JUA offers several payment options to fit your personal or business needs.

Payments can be made:

  • Monthly
  • Quarterly
  • All at once

Payment Types

Payments can be made via:

  • ACH transfer
  • Check
  • Credit/debit card (subject to processing fee)

Late Payments: A late payment may result in a gap in liability protection or cancellation of coverage. Don’t let this happen to you!
